Don’t Sweat Sixty: Age-defying Workouts for Seniors
Our guest for this Living to 100 Club Podcast is Matt Schechner. Matt shares his personal training method, developed following a harrowing spinal surgery and a journey to “beat the brace.” He wanted more out of life than to be in a brace for the rest of his life. Matt now teaches others what he has learned about fitness and focuses on workouts for seniors. His goal is to help others shift their attitudes about aging in a positive way and show them the tools to train safely. Matt believes strongly that this training helps others to enrich their lives. Matt discusses his book, Don’t Sweat 60, and the methods he used to avoid the brace and be in the shape of a 20-year-old. Be sure to tune in for this program.
Mini Bio
At age 13 Matt had a tumor that was so large it forced his spine into a dangerous lateral curve. He was in tremendous pain as a result. He was misdiagnosed twice and finally a doctor at New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery properly diagnosed his condition and successfully performed the surgery. They put Matt in a full-torso cast for a year and then wanted to put him in a full upper-body brace for the rest of my life and he refused to do it.
After repeated back and forth visits with the doctor and his mother Matt resolutely told them that there has to be another way. The doctor mentioned that exercise was showing some favor in rehabilitation research circles and that he could try it, but if it didn’t work it would be the brace for life. That started Matt’s journey in fitness and to beat the brace.
Matt now devotes his life to inspiring people and teaching them what he had learned to be able to build his body to beat the brace and to be in top shape at 60 years old. He also performs fitness events for charity including doing 1000 pull-up events with all proceeds going to Food for the Hungry.
