Purpose in Life

The Harvard Health Letter defines purpose in life as our reason to get up in the morning, our reason to engage in healthy behaviors. It is the reason some people perceive stressors as less difficult. Things that contribute to our sense of purpose can be as simple as a hobby, or as complicated as participating in a vital community program. Though there are no definite assured ways to bring purpose to our life, there are several actions that can contribute to a stronger sense of self.

How to Cultivate Sense of Purpose

  • Identify areas of strength — in our traits, values, relationships, communication skills, etc.
  • Reflect on past accomplishments, especially when overcoming obstacles
  • When was this sense of purpose stronger, and what had a favorable or unfavorable impact on it?
  • Who are the people you admire and what qualities of theirs would you like to emulate?
  • Consider being a mentor for another person
  • Identify needs or problems, on a global or local level, and find ways to volunteer or contribute to these areas needing a fix. Find volunteering opportunities in your community at volunteermatch.org
  • Write your own life review, exploring personal achievements and disappointments. This helps to create a story about what you want to share with others from this life review.

Purpose in life gives us a vision about what to look forward to. It helps us to organize our thoughts and actions. A sense of purpose contributes to our longevity, sense of satisfaction and happiness, and gives us a reason to lead healthier lives.
