Accidental Alcoholism: Gray Area Drinking

Accidental Alcoholism: Gray Area Drinking

This Living to 100 Club Podcast focuses on the status of excessive alcohol use in middle-aged and older adults and the recent factors contributing to over-drinking. It is a conversation about “accidental alcoholism.” It includes recommended solutions to reduce over-drinking. Our guest is Adrienne Tichy, the Co-Owner of The Lodge at Delray Beach and Creator of Recovery Comes Home. These programs are for those undergoing treatment and rehabilitation for their substance abuse. We describe how the Covid pandemic contributed to an increase in the use of alcohol and other drugs. Mainly, these contributing factors include the increased anxiety and stress, ease of access (e.g., alcohol now deliverable to homes), and isolation/boredom while at home.

Is escape the primary driver or are there other contributors? Importantly, what steps do we take when we see alcohol becoming a problem in our life? And what about the life of a family member or friend? What are effective coping skills and where can we turn for help? Join us as we learn why accidental alcoholism can affect anyone and why it is not “victimless.” And we learn the importance of awareness.
